Green4HEAT

The project is implemented under the Interreg Europe programme. The aim of the project is to “Accelerate the deployment of green heating and cooling solutions in the EU”. The heating and cooling of buildings is one of the main energy consumers in the EU, accounting for 30% of final energy consumption. The share of renewable energy sources in this area (~23%) is significantly higher than in electricity production (~38%); therefore, targeted interventions are still needed to accelerate the low-carbon transition. To this end, district heating represents a significant but untapped alternative, which could cover up to 50% of urban heating demand. The Green4HEAT project supports the improvement of the energy efficiency of the sector in order to apply modern technological components (heat pumps), increase sustainable district heating, use of renewable energy sources and waste heat.

The main activity of the project is to assess the territorial potential of the participating regions, to identify policy gaps. Joint assessment of the current situation, development of policy solutions taking into account local specificities to promote the spread of energy-efficient, green solutions in the field of heating and cooling. Exchange of experience between partners, expansion of the knowledge base, increase of policy capacity. Continuous evaluation of the results of the developments carried out in the regions of the project partners and holding information events with the involvement of stakeholders.

The project involves 9 organisations from 8 EU member states. The lead partner is the Greek Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (REMTH). Hungary is represented as a project partner by Pannon Novum. Belgium, Greece, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Spain and Slovenia provide one partner each.

The project implementation period is 36 months (from 01.04.2024 to 31.03.2027), with a follow-up period of 12 months and a closure period of 3 months, ending on 30.06.2028.

The project results will be presented through the distribution of newsletters, printed and electronic project descriptions translated into the languages of the participating countries, and through extensive use of social media.
